Google SynthID: Will People Soon Know If You Used AI?

As anticipated, technology is emerging that can help identify whether content has been generated by artificial intelligence. Google’s SynthID is one example, introducing invisible digital watermarks into AI-generated text, images, audio and video, allowing supported content to be identified.

The Positives

This is a positive development for transparency and trust. It could help organisations identify misleading content, reduce misinformation and establish whether certain materials have been AI-generated or altered.

The Potential Negatives

However, there are implications for professionals using AI in everyday communication. Imagine sending a lengthy, carefully structured email to a colleague or senior stakeholder. If they could identify that it was generated by AI, would they question how much thought, effort or personal attention you had put into it? Could it create the impression that you hadn’t taken the time to respond personally?

There is also a risk of misunderstanding. Someone might use AI simply to improve grammar or structure, rather than generate the entire message, yet still face questions about its authenticity.

What Does This Mean for the Workplace?

Importantly, SynthID is not a universal AI detector. It works with content that has been watermarked using compatible technology, and detection has limitations.

Nevertheless, the direction is clear. As AI-generated content becomes easier to identify, professionals may need to think more carefully about how they use AI and how that use is perceived.

The question is no longer just whether AI can help you write something, but how others might perceive your work if they know it did.
